In 1524 Guatemala was conquered by a Spanish Conquistador named Pedro de Alvarado . It became Republic in 1839. This happened after the United Provinces of Central America collapsed. During the years 1898-1920 Miguel Estrada Cabrera was the Dictator. In 1821 Guatemala gained its Independence from Spain and became a Republic of Central America. The years of 1960-1996 was a hard time for Guatemala as they were going through a Civil War. This war was being fought between the Government and the Leftist Rebels. This whole war was so that Guatemala would be able to have a new government. This was also a very hard time for the women in Guatemala, because while the whole war was going on the women were not be able to vote or have many rights at all. When the war was finally over women gained many more rights such as being able to vote and work at higher level jobs.
